Tees Valley City Region

In response to The Northern Way initiative, launched in 2004 - setting out the Government's proposals to bridge the £29 billion output gap between the North and the rest of the UK - the Tees Valley City Region Development Programme has been commissioned by One NorthEast and prepared by the Tees Valley Joint Strategy Unit.

As part of the Tees Valley City Region Development Programme the Joint Strategy Unit, in conjunction with the 5 Tees Valley local authorities, the Environment Agency, The Northern Way, North East Community Forests and Natural England, is preparing for a Green Infrastructure Strategy. The strategy explorers ways in which a network of green spaces and green corridors can be created running through urban, suburban, urban fringe and rural areas, providing an enhanced environment for new development and regeneration. A draft strategy is currently out for consultation - any comments should be forwarded to the Joint Strategy Unit by 23rd February 2007. Report

The main areas of the Joint Strategy Unit's remit include:

Strategic Planning: Responsible for the preparation of the Tees Valley Structure Plan, advising on waste and minerals planning issues; commenting on major planning applications; commenting on Local Plans, adjacent structure plans and other strategic policies; contributing to Regional Planning Advice and; maintaining and updating information about the environment. The team also gives policy advice on the Cleveland Structure Plan (Adopted 1995) and the Darlington Structure Plan (Adopted 2000).
Transport Planning : Strategic transport planning across the Tees Valley and the North of England, specialist transport modelling skills and traffic impact assessments of strategic major developments.
European Policy Team: Economic strategy formulation for the Tees Valley as a whole, acting as strategic guidance to the Boroughs in their development of local/community economic development. Plus the promotion of Tees Valley priorities for European funding; secretariat to the Tees Valley European Partnership; European Legal information service; Support to the Borough Councils on European issues.
Information & Forecasting : Providing a range of statistical information and interpretation. Items include employment, unemployment, economic issues, Linkdata business listings service, land availability, population, census and deprivation. The areas covered include national, regional, Tees Valley, borough, ward and other small areas.
Tourism : Deliver the Tees Valley Tourism Strategy to promote the Tees Valley to visitors locally, nationally and internationally, this is done through a wide range of activities including product development, marketing, workforce development and culture and sports.
