Network Rail is undertaking a detailed study (GRIP3) into the combined delivery of the above package. This work will be undertaken in parallel with a similar Network Rail study into gauge enhancement to Teesport and is scheduled for completion by Autumn 2007. The proposed rail investment package will also help facilitate the delivery of a more fit for purpose sub-regional rail network (Tees Valley Metro).
Tees Valley Metro
This proposal will provide a radical improvement to sub-regional connectivity by:
Converting the existing heavy rail operation between Darlington and Saltburn to tram-train operation;
Providing new rolling stock with higher levels of passenger quality and comfort;
Delivering five new stations along the route, serving key employment sites, major regeneration areas, Durham Tees Valley Airport, and possibly James Cook University Hospital, and upgrading all other stations along the route;
Supporting heavy rail/metro service enhancements and express bus services to link Hartlepool to the network, providing the same 4 services per hour frequency;
Providing a potential spur to Nunthorpe, linked to park and ride to serve East Cleveland.
An outline business case has been submitted to the Department for Transport and can be downloaded here.
This document outlines the key role that the scheme can play in helping facilitate the Tees Valley City Region Development programme and will be followed by a full business case to be submitted later in 2007.
